Beecher High School won the Match Points trophy Feb. 10 in the 43rd annual academic bowl competition sponsored by Kankakee Community College.
The team from Beecher defeated Herscher High School in the finals to win the competition. On the way to the finals, Beecher defeated Bishop McNamara Catholic High School and Iroquois West High School.
As the first place winner, Beecher High School received the $300 Match Points Scholarship. Members of the Beecher team are Zack Bolda, Brandon Cleary, Stephen Gianotti, Josie Hurling, Olivia Messing, Sam Ruckman and Emily Scremeti. The Beecher team is coached by Bob Ogdon.
The Herscher High School team defeated Kankakee High School and St. Anne Community High School on the way to the finals.
As runner up, Herscher High School received the $100 Match Points Scholarship. The Herscher team members are Matthew Barwegen, Jacob Elling, Jewell Horn, Justin Mau, Norma Nelson and Shannon Nugent. The Herscher High School team is coached by Jessie Rezba.
The team from Kankakee High School won the consolation bracket, defeating Bishop McNamara Catholic High School and Donovan High School. As the consolation winner, Kankakee High School also received a $100 Match Points Scholarship. The Kankakee High School team is coached by Melissa Gregoire.
Kankakee Community College is an accredited two-year college which awards
associate degrees and certificates of completion. KCC prepares students both to
transfer to four-year colleges and to enter the workforce. The college also
offers continuing education courses and certification training, literacy
programs, English as a Second Language and GED preparation. The KCC mission is
“Enhancing quality of life through learning.” The college has a Riverfront
Campus in Kankakee, South Extension Center in Watseka, North Extension Center in
Bradley and Manufacturing and Industrial Technology Center in Kankakee.
