As a KCC student, you have access to free tutoring services to assist you as you pursue your degree. Our tutor program is certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).
Tutoring aims to supplement what is done in the classroom and during study time, not substitute for it. Our qualified staff is trained to assist you in an environment conducive to learning for short-term and long-term academic and personal accomplishment.
With that in mind, please share your feedback on the things we are doing well and/or how tutoring services can be more effective. We appreciate your time and value your input. Please use the online Tutor Feedback Form for your suggestions.
Tutoring Services can be found in the Student Success Center, on the upper level of the Miner Memorial Library. Schedules for specific subjects can be found below. Please check in on arrival – no appointment is necessary.
Tutors are available to answer questions through online chat and video conference during their regularly scheduled hours, as well as during any campus closures due to weather, etc. Access these services at kcc.libguides.com/tutoringhelp.
You can also submit your papers online for writing help. Typically, you will receive feedback within 24 hours, Monday through Thursday (submissions received Friday and over weekends and breaks may take longer). Visit kcc.libguides.com/tutoringhelp to get started.
Schedule
Tutoring is available for most core courses. We will make every effort to accommodate your needs but cannot guarantee we will be able to find a tutor for you. Additionally, you can receive help with course-related Canvas questions or questions about other common technology such as MS Office or MyLabs products. We also offer tips for time management, studying, and test-taking strategies.
All students–in all course subjects–are welcome to visit for assistance with writing assignments at any point in the process! Tutors provide assistance with:
- Developing writing assignment ideas through brainstorming, outlining and other invention activities
- Providing feedback and suggestions during the draft stage of a written assignment
- Recommending revision strategies to polish students’ writing

Tutors are highly proficient and in some cases have mastered the subject area they tutor.
For more information on the services available from Tutoring Services, contact Tracy Conner at 815-802-8403 or tconner@kcc.edu.
Please take the following steps to maximize the benefits of tutoring:
- Attend all class meetings. Your tutor cannot help if you are not familiar with the material your instructor is covering.
- Know class assignments and teacher instructions. Your tutor will be better able to assist and time will not be wasted determining what you should work on if you know the assignment.
- Complete assignments and review before tutoring sessions. This includes reading the text, reviewing class notes and preparing questions for your tutor.
- Bring appropriate materials (book, paper, handouts, calculator, etc.). Make sure you have everything you will need to cover the material you are seeking help with.
Preparing for tutoring sessions will help you realize the greatest benefits of the service. It will also help you become a better student.
What are the benefits of tutoring?
The goal of tutoring is to empower students toward becoming independent and fearless lifelong learners. Tutors can provide you with valuable feedback on how to approach the course and the material. Tutoring provides content reinforcement of the material that has been presented in the classroom.
Do I have to pay for tutoring?
No. Tutoring is a free service to currently enrolled KCC students.
Who receives tutoring?
Everyone! Some of the students who come to the tutor labs are already doing well in their classes and want to do better or get ahead. It is crucial to take advantage of tutoring services before you fall too far behind. Tutoring will not help you if you sign up for a last-minute session before the big test!
What should I bring to my tutoring sessions?
Bring your syllabus, textbook, class notes, assignment details, questions and your work to date.
What happens during a tutoring session?
Your tutor will ask you what you need and how you have approached the subject so far. He or she will involve you in a discussion of the course material. Tutors are trained to help you find your own correct answers. They assist you with basic reading/writing/math skills necessary for success in your college courses. Your tutor will also help you with note-taking and test-taking skills, and tips on how to study your particular subject.
Do I need an appointment or an instructor referral to see a tutor?
No. Tutoring is available on a walk-in and first come, first served basis during open lab hours. However, an instructor may advise you to visit the tutoring center if he/she feels that you can benefit from the services offered. Online tutoring sessions do require an appointment, but appointments do not need to be made in advance; you can sign up for the next available time slot.
Can tutors help me with a take-home test or quiz?
No, but they may assist students with working through similar problems that could appear on a test or quiz.
Can I study in the tutoring center?
Tutoring Services can be busy at times. During such times, we appreciate your cooperation in making space available for students currently seeking tutoring help. During slower times, when space is available, you are welcome to study in the tutoring center.
Can I receive tutoring if I have a disability?
Yes. If you have a documented disability please contact the Office of Disability Services to ensure you receive the proper accommodations and support services needed for a successful educational experience. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the Office of Disability Services to receive such services.
